Meet our 2012 Markham/Stouffville Honourary Chair - Sonya Simonian:
In 2006, I suddenly became very ill. I had swollen and weak joints and unbearable abdominal pain which caused drastic weight loss. After a year of seeing different specialists, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and was put on a strict liquid diet and medications. In 2009, I was diagnosed with Fistulizing Crohn's - the biggest challenge so far, and a disease I continue to battle and monitor. Those who have Crohn's often feel alone and embarrassed, as did I, until last June when I took part in the 2011 walk. You are not alone!
I look forward to seeing you at the 2012 Walk! |

- Melanie Nayer:
When I began high school in 2006 I suddenly got very sick. After weeks in the hospital without a confirmed diagnosis I was admitted to SickKids Hospital and diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I then spent almost a month in the Gastroenterology ward. After many months of experimenting with medications, I began Remicade infusions. I am currently in remission, and to keep my disease under control I go for infusions every 7 weeks.
Walk with me and together we can find a cure! |

Hayden MacPhail
2012 Gutsy Walk Honourary Chair
Hello everyone! My name is Hayden MacPhail. In January 2010, I was really sick, but I did not know why I was sick. I found out that I have a disease called colitis. I had to use the bathroom all the time, sometimes as much as twenty times a day, and it was very painful. I was not able to do a lot of the things I loved, like running, and playing sports, especially hockey. Luckily, I have a good doctor who found a medicine that helped me. Now I can do all the things I love again. Please put together a team and join me for a great time at the 2012 Gutsy Walk. Together we can make a difference! |

Tyler
2012 Gutsy Walk Honourary Chair
My name is Tyler and I am 10 years old. I was diagnosed with severe panulcerative colitis when I was only 3 years old. Every Spring, my colitis flares up for a couple of months and I always end up in the hospital. These months are the worst of my life. I don't like having colitis because it means I have to take medication every day. It also restricts me from eating popcorn, blackberries and pomegranates. My worry is that when I grow up and have children they might get colitis too, as it can run in families. Join me at the Gutsy Walk and help CCFC raise money to find a cure for Crohn's and colitis! |

My name is Joey Lacaria, and I am 28 years old. I have been suffering from ulcerative colitis for over 10 years. My condition has affected my whole family. I have been on numerous medications and hospitalized many times. The Gutsy Walk is a cause that is very close to my heart. This is a time for everyone to come together, meet new people, get some exercise, and raise funds to find a cure! CCFC believes that a cure will be found for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Natalie Desjardins
2012 Gutsy Walk Honourary Chair
My name is Natalie Desjardins. I am 25 years old, a registered nurse and I've had Crohn's disease for 11 years. Since my diagnosis I've had 3 bowel resections, 3 abscesses drained, 1 temporary illeostomy and my last surgery was a permanent ostomy. When I was first diagnosed I had never heard of the disease nor did I understand the impact it would have on my entire life. The Gutsy Walk is a great event because it raises much needed funds for research and creates awareness about Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Come out and have some fun at the Gutsy Walk and help us find a cure! |
