Meet our 2012 Ajax/Pickering Gutsy Walk Honourary Chair - Elizabeth Houston:
In 2008 at age 11, after many years of severe abdominal pain, a colonoscopy and an endoscopy led to the diagnosis of Crohn's disease. I have tried numerous medications and missed many days of school over the years. Since starting a weekly injection in 2010 I have improved dramatically, thanks to the help of Dr. Yeung at the Galaxy Clinic at Centenary Hospital. My wish is that ongoing research will find a cure and benefit everyone who suffers from IBD.

I was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2006 and have since had many treatments, hospital stays and surgeries. My journey has motivated me to help others – especially children who are going through what I did – by helping to raise funds and awareness of IBD, and possibly also in a patient advocate role in the future.

Leah Hogan 2012 Gutsy Walk Honourary Chair
My name is Leah & I'll be 11 years old in June. Two years ago, my life changed forever. I was very sick for months, did not want to eat & did not have the energy to do stuff I love like cartwheels & sports. I woke up on my 9th birthday in the hospital & I was told that I have ulcerative colitis. I didn't really know what it was, but now I do. It is not good news to get on your birthday. I try to keep my sickness & symptoms under control with medication but there are days when even the medicine doesn't help. Living each day wondering whether you're going to get sick is no way to live life as a kid. Please join us for the Gutsy Walk & help us FIND A CURE! |

Heather Maxwell
2012 Gutsy Walk Honourary Chair
My name is Heather Maxwell. When I was nine, I started to get severe stomach cramps. The pain was unbearable. I thought I was dying & it was very scary. After many appointments & tests, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I also had surgery & although it took several tries, I am now on a medication that works for me. I have made a personal decision to not let Crohn's slow me down. I am working towards my lifeguarding accreditation, I play soccer all year long & I ski. I am now in grade 11 & last year, I made the honour roll. Every year I participate in the walk for Crohn's & Colitis with my family & friends because we firmly believe a cure can be found. |

My name is Adam I am 14 years old & currently attending my first year of high school. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis six years ago and have been in remission since 2010 while undergoing regular Remicade treatment. Since my diagnosis, my family & I have dedicated our efforts to raise funds for CCFC, in order to find a cure. Over the past 6 years, I have raised close to $30,000 for the annual Walk.
My name is Andrea, I was originally diagnosed with mild ulcerative proctitis while completing my university degree. However, when my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2007, my ulcerative proctitis became full-blown ulcerative colitis. In the ensuing years, I had my colon removed, underwent three surgeries, lived with two ostomies and now have an internal pouch known as a J-Pouch. My extracurricular time is largely dedicated to volunteering with the CCFC. Please join me on June 10th and help find a cure for IBD. |
